An Arlington ISD employee receives a COVID-19 vaccine March 8, 2021.

The Arlington Fire Department provided approximately 2,600 Johnson & Johnson one-dose COVID-19 vaccine shots Monday to Arlington Independent School District teachers, administrators, and support staff at its emergency mass vaccination site at Esports Stadium Arlington + Expo Center.

"It was a great day for the Arlington ISD,” said Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos. “There were so many smiling employees who were happy to be able to take another step in the fight against the pandemic. None of it would have been possible without so many great partners who came together to help our district.”

School and childcare workers are the latest group to become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. On March 2, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services directed states to expand eligibility to include “those who work in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, as well as Head Start and Early Head Start programs (including teachers, staff, and bus drivers) and those who work as or for licensed child care providers, including center-based and family care providers.”

Individuals who fall in groups Phase 1A and Phase 1B are also currently eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. These are typically first responders, healthcare workers, and individuals over 65 or who have certain chronic medical conditions that place them at a higher risk.

Since Dec. 28, the Arlington Fire Department has provided more than 82,100 COVID-19 vaccine shots at Esports Stadium Arlington.

The Fire Department's site will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday for Mansfield ISD, Kennedale ISD, Arlington charter school and private school employees who have already been contacted by the Arlington Fire Department for appointments to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The site is also scheduled to be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 11 and Friday, March 12 to provide second-dose Moderna vaccine shots to approximately 4,300 individuals who received their first-dose shots at the site between Feb. 8 and Feb. 12. The Fire Department will reach out by email and/or text message directly to those individuals with follow-up vaccination appointment information.

Individuals who receive confirmation of a second-dose appointment this week are asked to:

1. Bring their vaccine card given at the time of the first dose
2. Arrive within their appointment time frame
