From faster response times to earning the Insurance Service Office's elite designation for exemplary fire protection, the Arlington Fire Department has much to celebrate.
Arlington Fire Chief Don Crowson recently presented the department's annual report to the City Council, highlighting proactive fire prevention efforts, emergency preparedness and Homeland Security planning, public health and education initiatives and other priorities designed to keep the 99-square-mile city safe.
"We have one mission and that's to make a difference," Crowson said. "We're here to help the city and the citizens any way we can."
Highlights from the report include:
- City of Arlington recently received the ISO Class 1 designation, a Public Protection Classification held by only about 300 agencies nationwide.
- The Fire Department had 56,731 unit responses in FY17, a 4 percent increase from the previous year. Nearly 80 percent of the calls for service are medical related.
- Travel time to fire response calls fell by 29 seconds from the previous year.
- More than 16,870 fire inspections were conducted across the city.
- The Arlington Fire Charitable Group's Random Acts of Kindness program continues to make a difference in the community. The group's recent efforts include treating a terminally ill child and her family to a special night out and then later helping the family with that child's funeral expenses.
- Fire Chief Don Crowson was the recipient of the American Medical Association's 2017 Dr. Nathan David Award for Outstanding Career Public Servant on the Local Level.
