Set for March 25

Remember the days spent drawing hopscotch, four-square and doodles on the sidewalk in chalk? Does your child enjoy drawing all over your driveway with chalk? If so, join the Friends of O.S. Gray Natural Area for the inaugural Chalk the Walk art contest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25.

This art contest is open to all ages and is intended to "encourage people to get outdoors" as well as to create awareness about the O.S. Gray Natural Area and the Friends of O.S. Gray Natural Area, said Kevin Donovan, a member of the Friends group. The park is located at 2021 W. Abram Street, between Bowen Road and Fielder Road.

Participants will have one square of the sidewalk to illustrate what springtime in Texas looks like to them. Each participant will be given a box of chalk upon registration. Participants may also bring their own chalk if it is non-oil based and environmentally safe.

The art contest is $15 per family/team, $10 for individuals 18 and older, $10 for individuals ages 13 to 18, and $5 for ages 9 to 12. Children ages 8 and under will have a "free play" area to draw their own masterpieces.

If chalk art isn't where your talent lies, there's still plenty to see and do at the O.S. Gray Natural Area. The park features 20 acres of walking trails with a beautiful tree canopy. Volunteers will be available for nature tours around the area to see the different natural habitats including the pollinator garden and wildflower garden.

The nature area also features two playgrounds designed for ages two through five and five through 12.

"The playground is perfect. It's just the right size for my two year old to play on," said Justin Pillow, who brings his daughter to the nature area once a week. Pillow said he plans to bring his family to the Chalk the Walk art contest for "something we can do as a family."

Prizes for this event include $75 to first place winners, medals for second and third, and a plaque for the winners of the people's choice category. Each chalk art piece will be scored based on first impression, creativity, originality, skill, use of color, and representation of the theme "Springtime in Texas."

The public is invited to help choose the People's Choice winner. People's Choice voting will be between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Registration for this event will be accepted until 7 p.m. March 23. To register, please contact the Friends of O.S. Gray Natural Area at [email protected].
