Fundraiser Helps Center

H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center volunteer Tina Paulk said she's seen more than just an improvement in math and spelling grades for the young bilingual girl she's tutored the past two years.

The long-time Arlington resident, who spends an hour each week with the Crow Elementary student, said she's also watched the little girl become more confident as she learns.

"I've mostly seen a change, a real improvement in her self-esteem," Paulk said. "If a child has a very poor self-esteem, it's a hindrance to whatever they are trying to accomplish. If you can get them to feel good about themselves and not focus on what they can't do, but on what they can, you get along further."

The H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center, with six tutoring sites, has served more than 1,800 students in Arlington since 1996. The nonprofit invites the community to attend its annual Night of HOPE fundraiser this Saturday so it can continue its mission of providing free individual tutoring to children in grades three through eight in a safe learning environment.

"My tutor is always giving me encouragement," said a current student. "No matter how much I don't get it, my tutor never gives up on me."

The Night of HOPE event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 25 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1200 W. Green Oaks Blvd. Tickets, available online or at the door, are $45 a person or $360 for a table of 8.

Guests will enjoy a Spring Creek BBQ dinner followed by entertainment provided by the Bowie High School Volunteer Voices. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Teresa Taber Doughty, UTA Dean of the College of Education.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction. Some of the items up for bid include furniture from Pete Jones and a reserved City Suite for the Texas Ranger game on April 5 against the Cleveland Indians.
