This month, the Chevy Suburban turns 80 years old. According to NBC News, that makes the Suburban the "oldest, longest running automobile nameplate in the world."
Arlington's General Motors plant is the sole production facility in the country for the Suburban and all of the other SUVs the company produces including the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. 1,200 GM SUVs are produced in Arlington every day.
The General Motors plant in Arlington opened 60 years ago and is a critical part of the City's history and economy. When it opened in 1954, the plant employed 1,850 people. Over the years, as the plant has grown, so too have the job opportunities with 4,591 people currently working at the facility.
Those jobs have helped tens of thousands of people live their American Dream right here in Arlington. One of them is Norma Gonzalez, an Arlington native who graduated from Lamar High School and UT Arlington graduate. She is currently an industrial engineer at GM.
