José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico

This is the last week to experience the artistry of José Guadalupe Posada, a visionary illustrator whose legacy is perhaps the most influential of all Mexican artists but whose name was almost lost to history. Forever Forest Visiting Exhibit 

Forever Forest by Omaha Children’s Museum, is an immersive exhibit that teaches families how their everyday lives are connected to forests through the ways they live, work, and play. Families will enjoy hands-on activities focused on forest life and sustainable harvesting. Visit the River Legacy Nature Center to explore the forest like never before. Climb, crawl and slide on treetops, become a conductor for a day and work a kid-sized replica of a Union Pacific engine, or work together to build a house as you learn about the many things wood is used for! The exhibit runs through Saturday, Feb. 10, 2023.

Little Explorers – Downtown Library 

Stop by The Play Room at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library on 10 a.m. Fridays for a morning of play-based learning.  This come-and-go program will vary week-to-week as librarians explore art, math, science, engineering, and fine motor skills.  Join the Arlington Public Library as we playfully discover the world around us!  Designed for ages 1-4. Family Storytime – Southeast Branch Library

Join the Arlington Public Library’s fabulous library staff to sing, read and wiggle during storytime at the Southeast Branch Library 10:30 a.m. Fridays. This storytime is geared for ages 2-5. They will read books, sing songs, and have an activity after the program each week. Noon Year Party

Celebrate the New Year 12 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at the East Library and Recreation Center for a Noon Year party! The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department staff will have refreshments, games, music, and cupcakes. Must be 50+ years of age and have an annual Senior Activity Pass to participate. This pass is $25.00 for residents of Arlington or $35.00 for non-residents to enjoy a year's worth of senior activities. Please call 817-275-1351 to register.

Family Vision Board

Start the new year off right by making a vision board representing your goals and dreams with your loved ones. The event takes place 2-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library’s [re]Brary Room A. Whether it's personal growth, family adventures, or career aspirations, share your visions and support one another as you set and visualize goals as a family. Join Arlington Animal Services mobile adoption truck will be in front of DICK’S Sporting Goods at The Parks Mall Arlington with furry friends to meet 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024. Stop by to visit with an adoptable pet to get some pet therapy and possibly a forever friend. Cannot make it to the event? KUTUB: Arabic Book Club 

The Arabic Book Club “Kutub” meets at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library’s Resilience Multipurpose Room for on the first Saturday of the month January and February from 12-1:30 p.m., while repairs are made to the Northeast Branch Library. Members will discuss novels, short stories, poetry, non-fiction, music, feature films or documentaries that explore Arabic culture. Read and discuss what you’ve read. Exploring new cultures, values, and practices is what makes us better human beings as any culture has things to teach us, regardless of differences. Open for adults and seniors. No registration required.

Makerspace Open House

Visit the Makerspace Open House 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library’s Tinker Room and discover your new hobby! Watch demonstrations as we introduce you to our Glowforge Laser Printer, Carvey Milling Machine, 3D Printers, Cricut, as well as many others with something special for you to take home. The Arlington Public Library staff will present their upcoming classes and how you can use the Makerspace during open hours. This class is appropriate for ages 9+.

Fluid Art

Fluid art or pour painting with acrylic is a fun and exciting way to create beautiful abstract art 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at Catalyst Creative Arts. You will use various colored and premixed acrylic paints on a 16 x 20 or 18 x 24-inch canvas. Our artists will instruct you through several fluid art techniques and work with you as you complete your project. Paintings will be left to dry for 72 hours at the studio and then varnished by our artist before they can be picked up. No experience necessary. Recommended for 8 years and up. All materials provided.
