Honorary Street Sign Topper Proposal

The City of Arlington has received a community stakeholder request to extend the existing Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. honorary street sign toppers along Center Street between I-30 and I-20.  The section of Center Street between Randol Mill and Pioneer Parkway has had Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sign toppers installed at most major signalized intersections since January 2014. As the map below shows, this request is to add sign toppers at nine signalized intersections between I-30 and Volunteer Drive.

Honorary street sign toppers do not change the official name of the street and do not affect addressing, navigation, mailing, or deliveries.  The official name of the street between I-30 and Arbrook Boulevard would remain Center Street.  An image of the existing street sign topper is shown below.

The City opened a 30-day public comment period on this proposal and the proposal to re-name a portion of S. Center Street (described below) from March 24 to April 22, 2021.  City Council’s Municipal Policy Committee will review the information received on April 27, 2021.

Street Naming Proposal

In addition to the honorary street sign toppers between I-30 and Arbrook, stakeholders have also proposed officially naming South Center Street, from Arbrook Blvd. to SE Green Oaks Blvd., as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.  A map showing the extent of the proposed street name change is shown below.

On the existing portion of S. Center Street from Arbrook Blvd. to E. Bardin Rd, no developed parcels would require an address change

The portion of the street from E. Bardin Rd. to Cravens Park Drive does not exist yet but is currently under design, so there are no developed properties addressed as S. Center Street in that segment.  This portion of the roadway is scheduled to be constructed in 1-1.5 years.

The existing portion of Cravens Park Drive from where it currently dead ends to SE Green Oaks Blvd. would be officially be renamed as part of this proposal.  None of the homes in this area are addressed off of Cravens Park Drive, so again, no address changes would be required
