After two successful public meetings, the final recommendations for the New York Avenue Corridor Strategy will be presented to the public on Saturday, June 1, 2013.

The recommendations were formed from input received at the two previous public meetings and the project survey. The project is intended to generate ideas and identify key goals and strategies to create a comprehensive vision to maximize the Corridor's potential for redevelopment. A few of the final recommendations include improving the roads and sidewalks, creating an international corridor along Pioneer Parkway, working with the schools to promote the area's assets, and initiating a public art program to build on the area's cultural diversity. The Strategy also identifies three opportunity sites which are targeted for redevelopment at the Abram Street/New York Avenue intersection, Park Row Drive and New York Avenue intersection, and Pioneer Parkway and New York Avenue intersection. The opportunity sites include locations for a new neighborhood grocery store, a joint location for a new recreation center and library, and new senior housing. A market analysis has been completed which indicates a demand for these recommendations.

On Saturday, the East Arlington community will see a plan that has been created from their vision. The goals and tasks will be presented to the public to outline the implementation of the plan. Spanish, Vietnamese and sign language interpreters will be available.

After the conclusion of the final public meeting, City staff will present the recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council for consideration. Public hearings for the adoption of the plan will be scheduled in August. Visit the project's website for future meeting dates and past presentations.
