The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries proudly announces its designation as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This prestigious recognition enables UTA Libraries to offer comprehensive trademark and patent services to the campus community, Arlington, and the metroplex.
“This designation conveniently provides patent and trademark research resources to both our academic community and the general public, enabling product and technological innovation, research, and commercialization.” John Wang, Dean of Libraries, said.
This new service will be housed in the Day Family Research Lab, located in room 510 of the UTA Central Library.
“Becoming a Patent and Trademark Resource Center is an opportunity to join a growing network of libraries that assist their communities with various patent and trademark services, including protecting their intellectual property,” John Bayhi, Director of Research Services, said. “Our librarians will receive training from the United States Patent and Trademark Office on the best ways to access USPTO resources and provide those resources to our community. We will support inventors and entrepreneurs in navigating the process of finding existing patents or trademarks, walking through the application process, and connecting to a directory of patent attorneys.”
The Day Family Research Lab will expand its educational offerings to include workshops on topics relevant to inventors and entrepreneurs using USPTO tools and resources. The first of these workshops, “Discovering Patents: Effective Search Techniques in USPTO,” will take place in the lab from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3.
“Currently, the only other PTRC in the North Texas region is at the Dallas Public Library; by becoming a PTRC at UTA, we’re able to bring high-quality service to our local community at UTA and the surrounding areas,” Bayhi said. “In the last three years, 2021-2023, UTA researchers have been awarded 71 patents, according to the Innovation and Commercialization department in the Office of Research Administration. UTA Libraries PTRC will serve as a partner to researchers here at UTA, providing them with support through the patent process as they make discoveries and innovative technologies that will impact the world beyond research.”
Robert Berry, Supervisory Librarian with USPTO, extended his congratulations to UTA Libraries on achieving this designation.
