Dr. Maria Delgado: A Champion for Hispanic Education and Community at UTA
Dr. Maria Yareli Delgado, a proud first-generation Latina with a Ph.D., has become a trailblazer in education and a role model for the Hispanic community through her work at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Her journey from a small town in Zacatecas, Mexico, to becoming the inaugural senior director of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) initiatives at UTA is a story of perseverance, passion, and dedication to both her heritage and her students.
“As a Latina, it’s always challenging of the unknown,” Dr. Delgado reflects, describing the obstacles she faced as an immigrant navigating the American educational system. Born in Los Tanques, Valparaíso, Zacatecas, Dr. Delgado moved to the United States at the age of 15 with her family, driven by a deep desire to pursue higher education.
“We moved with that desire for me to go to college, and I think that has been embedded in my soul because I want to honor my mom and dad’s sacrifices,” she said.
Her journey wasn’t just about personal achievement, but about breaking barriers as a Latina woman in academia. She became the first in her family to earn a Ph.D., an accomplishment she cherishes.
"I am blessed for having this amazing job at UTA, but at the same time, I must do a good job to be a good role model for all the Latinos to come," she says.
In her role as the senior director of HSI Initiatives, Dr. Delgado has made it her mission to ensure that UTA becomes a Hispanic-thriving institution.
“Our main goal in the department is to advance our HSI federal designation and make sure that UTA is a place where Hispanic students can thrive,” she explains.
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Dr. Delgado serves as a research associate at the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) at UTA and an adjunct assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies. Her research focuses on women of color in leadership, community colleges, and the experiences of Latinx students.
“For me, the American Dream is to have an amazing job that I love and that I care about, but also that I am excited about going to every day,” says Dr. Delgado.
Her work at UTA exemplifies this dream, combining her professional accomplishments with a deep sense of responsibility to her community. Through her efforts, she is creating pathways for Hispanic students to achieve their own dreams, inspiring countless others along the way.
