Annual Pavement Survey

It’s that time of the year again! The Public Works Department is preparing to survey the street conditions in Central Arlington. Each year the vendor collects data on one-third of the City’s Streets. This year’s survey will focus on all city streets South of Park Row Drive and North of South Green Oaks Boulevard toward Interstate 20.

The Public Works Department is preparing to conduct its annual pavement survey program. This phase consists of contracting with a third-party vendor who operates a fleet of data collection vehicles equipped with an array of precision instrumentation and data collection equipment.

The data collection vehicle travels on the roads in the target area collecting information on the type, extent, and severity of pavement surface distress (i.e. cracks and ruts) in addition to collecting information on the smoothness and ride comfort. Below are visual examples of various asphalt and concrete road conditions:

Using technology to gather and record roadway data allows the City to develop a comprehensive and proactive approach to roadway management that ensures road maintenance budgets are spent wisely. Using this approach, the Public Works Department performed work on over 526 lane miles during Fiscal Year 2023. Of these, 10.7 miles were improved through a capital improvement project, the remaining lane miles received maintenance work either by city staff or contractors.

Please visit the department’s webpage for additional information on the street maintenance program and other Capital Improvement Projects managed by the Public Works Department. This project aligns with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Leverage Technology.
