The Arlington Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred on Monday, May 20, 2024 in the 3700 block of Shady Valley Drive.

At approximately 9:55 a.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home along Shady Valley Drive. A 20-year-old man got into an argument with a family member related to his alleged drug use – and the family member called 911 to express some concerns they had.

By the time officers got to the home, the man had left. Officers found him a short distance away and spoke with him. Following their conversation, the officers determined no criminal offense had occurred and offered to take the man back to the home. Before they would allow him to get in the patrol car, they attempted to frisk the man for any weapons. As they went to pat him down, the man suddenly took off running. Because he was not under arrest and had not committed a criminal offense at that time, the officers did not pursue him. Instead, they went back to the home and let the family member know what happened.

While they were speaking with the family member, another call came in from a nearby address. A homeowner reported that an unknown man approached them while holding a gun and asked for money. The man did not harm the homeowner and left the address without any money. Based on the suspect description the homeowner gave, officers realized this individual was the 20-year-old man they had just encountered. Now that they had information he was potentially armed, they began searching for him.

While officers were out looking for him, the family member reported the man came back to their home and was attempting to leave in a pickup truck. As officers approached the home, the suspect backed out of the driveway. The officers also reported seeing a firearm. The officers called out a description of the pickup truck. Other responding officers quickly located the pickup and attempted to pull over the vehicle. The man did not stop and continued driving. A pursuit was then initiated.

During the pursuit, investigators believe the man fired a shot through his windshield at an APD officer who was standing outside his vehicle, posted up ahead of where the pursuit was traveling. The officer was not struck and was not injured.

Moments later, the man collided with another vehicle that was traveling along the roadway. The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries. Following the crash, the man exited the pickup and took off running.

Officers then pursued him on foot. They tracked the man to a home in the 3700 block of Shady Valley Drive, where he ran up a long driveway and to a carport where another vehicle was parked.

Two officers approached the driveway and saw the man. During this encounter, both officers fired their service weapons multiple times at the man. After the shots were fired and the man showed officers his hands, they approached him and placed him in handcuffs. It was at this point, they saw he’d sustained gunshot wounds. Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived on scene.

The man was transported to an area hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive.

Officers recovered a firearm near the carport. Although investigators believe the man fired the gun during the pursuit, it remains unclear whether he fired any shots from the carport.

During follow-up investigation, detectives also learned he reportedly fired shots inside the family member’s home. No one inside the home was injured.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The department will release the man’s name once he is booked into the Arlington City Jail. He will be charged with one count of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Aggravated Assault Family Violence, and one count of Evading.

As is standard procedure anytime an officer fires their service weapon, there are currently two investigations taking place:

• a criminal investigation led by the APD Homicide Unit that will review the entire incident and determine if any criminal offenses were committed.

• an administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit that will determine whether officers followed department policies and procedures during the incident.

Per department policy, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
