Celebrate 2023 Global Diversity Awareness Month in Arlington: The American Dream City
October is Global Diversity Awareness Month. We are fortunate that Arlington is 5th most diverse city in the nation, and during this time we are encouraging residents to celebrate and spread awareness about the diversity represented throughout our community.
With it being easier now than ever to connect, Global Diversity Awareness Month highlights the importance of sharing and learning more about our unique cultures and life experience.
- Listen to music from different places around the world. Check out Symphony Arlington’s upcoming 2023-2024 London is Calling season or enjoy the MoMo Festival at Levitt Pavilion Arlington on Oct. 28.
- Learn about the various diversity awareness events happening in October, including Filipino-American Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples Day, Italian-American Heritage Month, LGBTQ History Month, and Polish-American Heritage Month. The Arlington Public Library can recommend books and offers a variety of programs and events, such as Spice Club, Anime Club, Arabic Book Club and World Language Storytime, to help you explore.
- Watch a documentary. Documentaries are an excellent source of information and offer various community perspectives on topics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and more. Arlington residents will have an opportunity to see “A Place of Our Own,” which is the first episode of the documentary Echoes from The Hill, when it debuts Oct. 26 on PBS’ Frame of Mind series. The episode explores what life was like for Black residents in a small Arlington community known as The Hill. Approximately a five-block area of the city, The Hill was the only historic addition platted specifically for Arlington’s African American residents. Recent episodes include features on YMCA’s International Food Festival, TJ’s Catfish & Wings and M’Jays House of Smoke, and Rio Bravo Arlington. The City’s MWBE Small Business Promotion series introduces residents to local small businesses, such as The Beauty Pro University, Commodities and Top Notch Attyre.
- Visit a local museum to explore exhibits on various communities, cultures, and histories. The Arlington Museum of Art’s newest exhibition, Jose Guadalupe Posado: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico, runs from Oct. 21 to Jan. 7, 2024.
