North Texas Yard Card Owners in front of City Hall
From a side hustle to being booked three months straight during the pandemic, North Texas Yard Cards, an Arlington-based and woman-owned, small business, has grown considerably since the business first started in 2016. Despite the growth, the mission remains the same, create lasting memories and “deliver smiles and surprises, for any occasion, everyday.”
With two 16-year-olds in the house who were ready to start driving, Georgina Torres started the business to bring in some extra income for her family. Her career has been focused on advertising and marketing, specifically publishing for parenting magazines. That’s where she learned about yard signs for children’s birthday parties and decided to give it a try.
Now, North Texas Yard Cards creates lawn signs for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and more. They even offer custom yard signs and can be booked any day of the year. Torres describes themselves as a post office, “We work seven days a week, rain or shine, even on holidays we will deliver our greetings.”
When the pandemic hit, Georgina wasn’t sure what would happen to the business, but then the most amazing thing happened.
“We just started getting so many orders we couldn’t even respond to them all. Sometimes our website even crashed,” Georgina remembers. “Definitely a good problem, but it took us by surprise. So, we rallied the troops and it was all hands on deck.”
North Texas Yard Cards is more of a family business now, with Georgina’s daughter, Cecelia Nelson, stepping up to help grow the business and keeping it going. She remembers having to set up seven yard signs a night, sometimes as far away as DeSoto to Mansfield, and all over the DFW Metroplex.
“There was a lot of logistics we didn’t have to worry about before,” Cecelia said. “But I’m happy we were able to give kids something for their birthday when they couldn’t go to a Chuck E. Cheese or go to a venue birthday place, we were still able to give them something during that time.”
North Texas Yard Cards has three packages that start at $95. They deliver for free within an eight-mile radius. Canales Furniture, another Small Business of Arlington, who has grown substantially in the last few years, wants to give back to the community and is sponsoring this program with the Planning & Development Services Department for the year 2022. In their new headquarters at 102 E.
