National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (NPSTW) began in 1981 as an idea to designate a specific week to honor public safety telecommunicators. This was the perfect chance to allow the public safety communications community, and the citizens they serve, an opportunity of awareness for the hard work and dedication of their 911 Operators and dispatchers. The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International (APCO) convinced Congress in October 1991 of the need for a formal proclamation in recognition of NPSTW.

Since then, the second week in April has been designated for NPSTW. We celebrate our 911 operators and dispatchers every year in many ways. In the past, several departments and organizations within the City have been a part of the celebration by expressing support in the form of cards, gift baskets, food and more. Each agency is encouraged to celebrate and honor its telecommunicators in its own way.

This year, we will continue the tradition of honoring our 911 operators and dispatchers in collaboration with the Tarrant County 911 District.
