Several City of Arlington departments worked together early Wednesday morning to make sure residents were safe after a gas leak prompted authorities to evacuate buildings in the area.
Construction crews ruptured a gas line in the 1800 block of East Abram Street around 8:18 a.m., according to the Arlington Fire Department. Hazmat crews were on the scene shortly thereafter.
Authorities evacuated neighboring buildings shortly afterward. Two Handitran buses were dispatched to help evacuate 80 students and staff at two daycare center located near the gas leak. Some students were transported to a daycare centers located in an area outside of the evacuation zone.
Police closed Abram Street in both directions between New York Avenue and Browning Street, said Lee Tovar, Arlington Fire Department spokesperson.
Atmos Energy crews were able to fix the leak in approximately two hours.
