During Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Animal Services Center (AASC) staff members brought awareness to pit bulls - the often feared, misunderstood dog breed with special shelter activities, including a pit bull fashion show.
On October 25, Ray Rentschler of AASC taught a Responsible Pit Bull Ownership Class to 13 people interested in adopting a pit bull. All attendees received a certificate from Respect A Bull, Inc. and a $25 adoption fee ticket to adopt a pit bull from October 26 - 31.
On Saturday, October 26, Kristie Miller and "Turtle the Painting Pit Bull" from Respect A Bull, Inc. presented the main event. In addition to prizes being given out, people marveled at Turtle's dynamic painting skills, which have generated money for programs helping other pit bulls.
Moments later, people were enjoying the Parade of Pretty Pitties showcasing various Animal Services alumni pit bulls wearing fine costumes. This was a special and fun event to see all the pit bulls dressed up and parading around for all to see.
The day's festivities ended with a "Jeopardy Game Pit Bull Style." A series of facts about pit bulls was placed around the shelter so that everyone could learn more about the pit bull breed. Afterwards, attendees were invited to play the Jeopardy game to show how much they learned.
The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) gave 36 rabies vaccines and saw a total of 60 pets. Also, we adopted out 26 dogs on Saturday, including three pit bulls.
