The City of Arlington has negotiated a settlement in a 2005 lawsuit involving a group of Arlington residents who claimed the City failed to ensure its sidewalks were accessible to people with disabilities. The City reached a settlement based upon a review of all locations listed in the plaintiffs' complaint and an independent survey on sidewalk accessibility provided during the course of the lawsuit.

The City agreed to pay the total sum of $310,321.99 for all of the plaintiffs' attorney fees and expenses. The parties identified a number of sidewalks that had accessibility issues and improvements will be made to those specific locations within the next two years.

City Attorney Melinda Barlow said, "It's good for the City of Arlington, definitely good for the residents and we now have a better process in place to address the concerns of the mobility-impaired community. We are very pleased.'

The status of these improvements will be posted on www.arlingtontx.gov.
