The City of Arlington's Public Works and Transportation Department was awarded its second re-accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA) on July 3, 2018. The accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the nationally recognized management practices established in the public works industry.
Designation as an accredited agency is an honor for the City of Arlington, as it is only awarded to agencies who have been willing to undergo an intensive self-assessment process which requires agencies to thoroughly evaluate department-wide policies, procedures, and practices.
In January 2017, the department embarked on an intensive self-evaluation of more than 400 management and operations policies, practices, and procedures to ensure compliance with the latest industry standards. Upon completion of the self-assessment, a team of public works professionals from Washington, Florida, and Missouri conducted an on-site review of the department's operations. The results of the review concluded that the department met or exceeded all the applicable established standards.
"The awarding of our second APWA Re-Accreditation shows we have dedicated ourselves to continuous improvement and excellence. We are extremely proud to receive this honor," Public Works and Transportation Director Mindy Carmichael said. "The heroes of the award are the dedicated men and women of our department whose mission is to provide services and programs that contribute to making Arlington a great place to live and work."
At the time of initial accreditation in July 2010, the department became the 3rd agency in the State of Texas and the 59th agency in North America to receive the prestigious designation. There are currently 143 accredited agencies in North America.
The City of Arlington Public Works and Transportation Department will formally receive the Accreditation award from APWA Accreditation Councilmember Shawn Poe at the September 18 City Council evening meeting.
