Online shopping may be a faster way to buy and sell items, but law enforcement officials from three police agencies have come together to remind the public to beware of robbery schemes.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true," said Sergeant Donald Fulbright with the APD Robbery Unit.

This week, during a joint news conference with Arlington, Fort Worth and Grand Prairie police departments, officers shared crime stats and safety information. From January 2013 to May 2013, Arlington has already investigated eight robberies tied to social media platforms.

"An increase in technology has led to an increase in crime" Detective Brian Raynsford with the Fort Worth Police Department Robbery Unit told reporters gathered at the Grand Prairie Public Safety Building. He said a majority of these cases involve young adults and teens.

"Be cautious. Meeting location is very important," he said. "Avoid remote locations. Take someone with you. Be safe while doing business with internet-based sites."

Following Thursday's news conference, news stories appeared on several television and radio networks, including online publications. Safety information is going up on websites and on social media. This summer, officers are available to take safety presentations to youth groups and Community Watch meetings.

Online shoppers are encouraged to research the buyer and seller. Do an internet search and check other websites to see if the buyer or seller has had other reported problems. Always take someone along when you conduct your transaction.
