Library’s LEGO Camp Gives Kids Chance to Build Problem Solving, Creative Thinking Skills
Arlington children had a blast building during the Arlington Public Library's LEGO Camp. During the three-day camp, children created and programmed motorized objects using LEGO Wedo kits. These kits include LEGO bricks, motors, sensors, and a USB connection. Students build their projects, then connect them to a computer to bring them to life.
Campers worked on activities from the LEGO curriculum, but also wrote a story and built scenes with to animate their own ideas.
"It was wonderful to see all the children creating such imaginative worlds with the LEGO blocks," said librarian Dawn Reyes. "For example, one girl wanted a dragon for her story, and through trial and error, she made a detailed red dragon head peeking over a LEGO tower."
LEGOs give children a chance to use their problem solving and creative thinking skills. The LEGO Wedo kits, which add coding and computer programming to LEGO creations, provide new challenges. Campers learned to troubleshoot when their motorized creations didn't perform the correct tasks.
"This is my second time at LEGO Camp," said one participant, "and it's just as great as last year."
LEGO Camp returns July 18-20 for a second session. Online registration is required and will be available beginning July 3. Click here for more information, or to sign up.
