Choosing to adopt a cute, four-legged family member can be an exciting and rewarding experience.
Thanks to people living in the Arlington area, homeless pets are finding adoptive families through the Arlington Animal Services Center (AASC) pet adoption program. The center's goal is to find a lifelong, loving home for adoptable pets.
As a way of increasing the number of pets being adopted, AASC launched a fun Pet of the Week video campaign in June. This ongoing campaign has enabled AASC to spread the word-through television, print and online outlets- about adoptable dogs and cats selected and promoted by the center.
Since taping began, 31 pets have been adopted, 13 pets have been placed with a rescue/placement partner and one pet was returned to their owner after being lost.
"The Pet of the Week gives our community an opportunity to see our pets in a positive light," said Arlington Animal Services Manager Chris Huff. "There are individuals looking for a special breed or a special look to fit their life styles."
Huff has been pleasantly surprised by the campaign's immediate success.
"Some visitors have come into the shelter ready to adopt after seeing the Pet of the Week and we have to convince them to visit with the pet to make a sound decision. The viewing of pets from a still photo to video footage gives a more personal experience for the viewers."
Each week, the campaign features one dog and one cat looking for a family. You can check out their pictures on outdoor billboards, MyArlingtonTx.com, the City of Arlington's government channel and the City's main website.
