This year, Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson shared the holiday spirit by working Christmas Day for an evening shift officer who otherwise would not have been able to take the day off.
To select an officer, Chief Johnson held his first ever "Holiday Photo Caption" contest in November. Evening shift officers were able to look at a photograph (pictured left) and write a caption to accompany the photo. A photo of K9 Mojo along with an officer dressed a burglar and a pile of donuts was presented to the department. The best caption for the photo, as judged by Chief Johnson's daughters, resulted in the Chief working for that officer during their shift for Christmas Day. Officer Brandon Evans was the winner with the caption, "No jelly in the donuts? Looks like it's burglar for lunch again."
Chief Johnson reported for duty in the East District at 2 p.m. on Christmas Day so Officer Evans could stay home with his family. He attended briefing and then worked the 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift, answering calls for service in Arlington's East District.
"My hope is that each and every one of my officers will accept this small gesture as my appreciation for what they do for both our community and the department each and every day," said Chief Johnson. Officer Evans knows that working holidays is sometimes part of the job, but he said he was very grateful for the opportunity to spend Christmas Day at home with his family.
