As the Homecoming parade prepared to march down the street, Mayor Robert Cluck unveiled a small surprise to University of Texas at Arlington President James D. Spaniolo.

A street.

The university requested a portion of Pecan Street which runs through College Park District be renamed Spaniolo Drive. The stretch is marked with a new street sign.

"Dr. Spaniolo has done so much for UTA and for Arlington,' Cluck said. "He has a vision for UTA to become a prominent force in this country with a top research program.'

Spaniolo, who announced his retirement earlier this year, is frequently credited with working with city and community leaders to revitalize downtown Arlington.

The new College Park District features the Dan Dipert University Welcome Center, Vandergriff Hall, The Lofts at College Park, The Green at College Park, retail space and restaurants.

"I'm proud to be a Maverick, and I'm proud to live in Arlington,' Spaniolo said.

That revitalization has paid off, as hundreds of students, community members, parents and city leaders filled College Park District to celebrate UTA's first fall Homecoming in nearly a quarter-century.

A parade featured cheerleaders, spirit groups, Army ROTC, athletes, alumni and Greek organizations. Fireworks and live music followed a basketball game against the University of Oklahoma.

Attendees said this year's event easily topped the attendance of previous years.

Sarah Adtani, a freshman in biology, said she chose UTA because it was close to her Euless home, but she fell in love with the school spirit and close-knit atmosphere the university provides.

"This is great, really lively,' Adtani said. "UTA is so welcoming and friendly.'
