Allan Saxe, of Arlington, was recently named the recipient of the Texas Library Association's Benefactor Award for his contributions to the Arlington Public Library. The award was announced on April 18 at a luncheon in Houston.
The Library nominated Saxe for the award because of the $50,000 he donated toward the Technology Training Center and administration boardroom upgrades at the George W. Hawkes Central Library in 2011. The Technology Training Center, located on the second floor, includes 12 student computers and a 55-inch instructor's monitor and offers classes on basic computer skills, Microsoft Office, advanced software programs, online genealogy, digital photography, and more. The board room provides meeting space for the library, city residents and groups.
"I love my name being associated with perhaps the greatest of all educational institutions - a library!" said Saxe, political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. "As we all know, they are the great inheritors of our knowledge. There should always be a library in the center of every town."
Saxe has made other contributions to the Arlington Public Library System, including a donation in support of the Ruthie Brock Reading Garden at the Southwest Branch Library, which opened to the public in 2007. Brock, a librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington, accepted the award on behalf of Saxe.
Since 1960, the Texas Library Association (TLA) has honored and recognized excellence in librarianship and outstanding contributions to Texas Libraries through awards presented annually at the TLA spring conference. The Benefactor Award recognizes substantial donations such as land, buildings, stocks, cash and collections by individuals, institutions and foundations.
