Keeping A Sharp Mind

While puzzles and games are great ways to keep your brain active, stepping out of your comfort zone and taking on new tasks is another way to help you stay alert.

According to Harvard University research, one of the most valuable things you can do to keep your brain cells sharp throughout the years is to challenge your brain with mental exercises.

Diana Kerwin, M.D., director of Texas Alzheimer's and Memory Disorders, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice, and chief of Geriatrics and physician on the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, recommends these activities to help keep your brain strong and active.

CONTROL THE KITCHEN (that's right, we said it)
Organization can do wonders for the brain. Reorganize and label your kitchen pantry or other household storage areas. If you like to cook, exercise your brain by organizing and labeling your spices by using your senses. If you like to garden, you can do similar exercises by quizzing yourself on flower types and names.

EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Learn new skills, such as ballroom dancing or another language, to increase cognitive health.

BREAK A PHYSICAL SWEAT
Amp up your exercise program. Physical activity increases blood flow and nourishes the brain. Small changes such as taking the stairs and parking further from the store or office can lead to overall improved health.

EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE
Learn something new. You've heard the phrase "use it or lose it," and that certainly applies to your brainpower. Next time you're at the bookstore, select a novel or magazine you typically wouldn't read to expand your mind and vocabulary.
