A crowd in the hundreds comprised of veterans, residents and local officials braved the harsh cold and frigid wind chill this Veterans Day in Veterans Park to honor those men and women who fought for our country.
"I'll always have a special place in my heart for the brave men and women who serve," said Mayor Robert Cluck, who, during his speech, issued a proclamation officially making Nov 11, 2014 Veterans Day in Arlington. "It is an honor to honor you."
Cluck, along with members of the Arlington City Council, several state representatives and visiting military officers were among the public officials on hand to help mark the occasion. Remarking how much of a difference veterans have made to make Arlington and the nation a better, safer place, Cluck quoted famed General George S. Patton. "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men."
What also made this Veterans Day a special one was the recognition of South Vietnamese soldiers. When it came time to present the colors, both representatives from the US Marine Corps Color Guard and the Republic of Vietnam Color Guard did the honors.
Tom Bui, Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Heroes of the South Vietnam Memorial Foundation, addressed the crowd in both English and Vietnamese. "We are here today to remember those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom."
During his keynote address to the crowd, Major General James Williams, USMC (Ret), who spent 35 years in active duty, talked greatly about the veterans of the Korean War.
"In the winter time during that war, you faced negative 51 degree wind chill wearing only leather boots without insulation. Your gloves were no better. Your toes froze. Your hands froze. But you fought on. The Korean War is often called "The Forgotten War," but we have not forgotten. The fight is always about freedom."
