Global Youth Service Day mobilizes millions of youth from over 100 countries to improve their communities through service. It remains one of the largest service events of its kind.

On Saturday, April 21, youth groups from area schools, and faith-based and nonprofit organizations will make a difference in Arlington when they scatter throughout the city to paint houses, pick up trash, remove debris, plant gardens, tutor, and fund-raise.

UT Arlington's Big Event, also observed on April 21, is expected to include an additional 1,000 college participants making a difference through service.

Some service learning events will begin as early as Friday. Martin High School's Gollywhopper Games is a math, carnival-style event for junior high and elementary students.

On Saturday, the Juan Seguin High School Latin Club and Student Council will sponsor Walk It Out, a 5k fun run/walk at Veteran's Park that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and March of Dimes.

The Emerging Young Leaders, a group of teen girls, will plant flowers in their community garden at Veda Knox Elementary School.

The Arlington Alliance for Youth remains a lead agency for Global Youth Service Day.

"This is our signature event of the year," said AA4Y Vice Chairman Tim Cameron "It's a time when our youth identify a local need and they address it through service."

After all the work is done, everyone is invited to join the City of Arlington at a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 at the Levitt Pavilion in downtown Arlington. Free hot dogs and drinks! The celebration will also feature the Paul Demer Band and recognize event sponsors and youth award recipients.

During the celebration, City Council member Lana Wolff will proclaim Saturday, April 21, Global Youth Service Day in Arlington.
