A plan to revitalize the aging New York Avenue Corridor received the green light from Arlington City Council Tuesday night.
City officials presented a plan that capitalized on the East Arlington area's role as a city connector, as well as its cultural diversity and flourishing Hispanic and Vietnamese neighborhoods. Resident, business owners and other stakeholders met with city leaders and consultants began meeting last October to develop this plan.
Some of the final recommendations featured in the New York Avenue Corridor Strategy include a new neighborhood grocer, a mixed-use development with office and retail space, cottage housing for seniors, improved landscaping and sidewalks.
The corridor - bounded by East Abram on the north and East Arkansas lane on the south - serves as a key connector between the Entertainment District, the Great Southwest Industrial District/General Motors Assembly Plant and Interstate 20.
Within the plan are three opportunity sites targeted for redevelopment: the intersections of Abram Street and New York Avenue, Park Row Drive and New York Avenue, as well as Pioneer Parkway and New York Avenue.
The developer for the corridor strategy is Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc.
