Water Coloring

Whether you're cooling off with a swim during summer, rinsing vegetables for dinner or showering in the morning, water plays an important role. Over the next month, Arlington Water Utilities and its partners are asking students to think and demonstrate the value of water in their lives and in the environment during the 2018 Value of Water Coloring Contest.

The contest is part of the national Value of Water campaign, which seeks to educate and inspire the U.S. on water's value to our society. The campaign encourages communities to observe Imagine A Day Without Water, a nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water, on Oct. 10.

Starting this week, students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grades are invited to participate in the coloring contest by illustrating their answer to the sentence "Because I have water I can..." Arlington Water Utilities, Arlington Public Library, River Legacy Living Science Center, and Tarrant Regional Water District are co-sponsoring the contest. Entry forms are available online through this link or they can be found at any Arlington Public Library location or at the River Legacy Living Science Center, 703 NW Green Oaks Blvd. Click here to view library locations near you.

The deadline for entries is by the end of the business day on Monday, Oct. 1. Forms can be turned in at any Arlington Public Library location, the River Legacy Living Science Center, or the Arlington Water Utilities South Service Center at 1100 SW Green Oaks Blvd.

One winning entry will be chosen in the six age categories and the winning entries will be displayed at River Legacy's After Dark in the Park fall festival and fundraiser, scheduled from Oct. 5 to 7.

Winning students and their teacher will receive five water-themed books, tickets to River Legacy's Discovery Room and an invitation to be recognized at an Arlington City Council meeting. Winners also will be featured on the Arlington Water Facebook page on Oct. 10.

Arlington Water Utilities' 2017 Value of Water coloring contest had more than 500 entries from elementary school-aged students, pre-kindergarten through third grade. Each entry demonstrated the student's awareness of how valuable of a role water plays every day. You can click here to see a slideshow of last year's entries.

Water holds importance through all aspects of life, including: the environment, economy, community, and ourselves. Currently, the nation's water and wastewater infrastructure are at risk and bring challenges. Through education and resources, the campaign takes the challenges and provides opportunities for the nation to invest in the water and wastewater infrastructure.
