Mayor Cluck, Charlotte Jones Anderson and former Cowboy Emmitt Smith wielded sledgehammers this morning to bust up a wall at The Salvation Army in Arlington, officially launching long-awaited construction on the region's first Youth Education Town (YET).
Each year, the National Football League donates $1 million to establish a Youth Education Town in Super Bowl cities as a lasting legacy of the game. Super Bowl XLV was held in Arlington in February 2011. A $1 million grant was also awarded to the Salvation Army from the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Arlington Charities.
Youth Education Towns are educational and recreation centers that positively impact the lives of young people. Arlington's legacy project, located at The Salvation Army's 38,000 square-foot community center at 712 W. Abrams Street, could open as soon as summer 2013.
