Deciphering the Code

City codes differ from city to city. Here's how to make sure you're compliant with Arlington's city codes.

You probably already knew that parking vehicles in your front yard or letting weeds and grass get too high are two big no-nos in terms of Arlington's code compliances. But what about other issues when it comes to tree limbs, signs, and pools? Here are the top ten Arlington city code violations:

  1. High weeds and grass
  2. Illegal dumping
  3. Nuisance vehicles
  4. Illegal signs
  5. Parking of vehicles
  6. Overhanging tree limbs
  7. Unclean premises
  8. Trash place out too early
  9. Dilapidated fence
  10. Oversize vehicles

Now that you know the top ten, can you guess what two issues are the most often code violations?

"High weeds and grass and unclean premises," said Mike Bass, Director of Code Compliance Services for the City.

While the codes help keep your neighborhood clean and looking good, aesthetics aren't the only reason the codes exist. Cities put these rules in place to protect people. For instance stagnant water in an unused pool can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which could spread the West Nile Virus. And, an old refrigerator can be a safety hazard for a child, who can climb in it and suffocate if the door accidentally closes.

"Code violations impact the environment, health, safety, property values, economic development, perception of crime and general well-being of the community and visitors,'" said Bass. "The best way for residents to avoid code violations is to provide continual maintenance and upkeep on their property."

And what can you do if you see a problem in your neighborhood? Bass recommends calling the City's Action Center at 817-459-6777 or submitting an online request for service.
