The Medical Center of Arlington Texas Rangers Fitness All-Stars Program hosted a fitness rally for fifth-grade students at Beckham Elementary School on Thursday, December 15.
Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland, accompanied by Rangers Captain, members from the Arlington Fire Department, and Medical Center of Arlington staff, encouraged students getting ready to break for the holiday season to remember that healthy lifestyle choices do not have to stop when school lets out for the holidays.
Thursday's program touched on the diet, physical activity, and even incorporated dancing to favorite holiday tunes such as Rangers Captain favorite "Run Rudolph Run," by Chuck Berry.
Firefighters from the Arlington Fire Department set the stage for the nearly 100 fifth graders in attendance, with introductions followed by advice on how to live healthily. Next, Derek Holland spoke to students about how he lives a healthy lifestyle and then participated in interactive games with the students such as corndog toss.
Rangers Captain wrapped-up the event by teaching students some of his famous dance moves for a group holiday dance. The rally ended with a recap of the healthy lifestyle tips the students had learned during the event.
The holiday-themed rally was part of the Medical Center of Arlington Texas Rangers Fitness All-Stars Program's goal to promote healthy living. The fitness all-stars program was designed to prevent childhood obesity and promote long-lasting healthy life choices. The program, supported by the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and the Medical Center of Arlington, began in 2006 and features a DVD used in classrooms, monthly school presentations, and monthly recognition for participating schools.
