Five teams, including one from Ohio State, braved the cold temperatures to compete in Thursday's tree planting challenge at High Oak Park in Arlington.
Thanks to the Texas Tree Foundation, U.S. and Texas Forest Service, 100 trees were being planted to help the city go green in honor of the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship, which will be played Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Competition was fierce, with five-member teams from the University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, Brookhaven College and Dallas Baptist College joining Ohio State to see who could plant 10 trees faster and better than the rest. Ohio State would go on to win the competition.
Prior to the race, Mayor Robert Cluck thanked each team for participating in this historic event, one that will have a lasting effect on the community. Organizers expect the trees to benefit the surrounding community for more than 100 years.
