The project currently underway along Rocky Canyon Road is being constructed to address drainage issues in the neighborhood generally bounded by Rocky Canyon to the north, North Cooper Street to the east, and Stafford Drive to the south and west. The City of Arlington has received numerous complaints over the years regarding flooding in this neighborhood, so the project was included in this year's Capital Improvements Program.
The construction will include installation of 2,337 linear feet of underground storm drains to provide protection against a 100-year storm event. The neighborhood currently relies mostly on surface drainage, which has led to repetitive flooding in years past. During the data collection and design phase of the project, the City has identified at least seven different homes that have flooded multiple times.
The project also includes replacement of sanitary sewer and water mains. The neighborhood was developed in the early 1970s, and the existing water and sewer lines require frequent maintenance and repairs. The City will replace 3,740 linear feet of sanitary sewer pipe and 3,840 linear feet of water pipe with PVC lines.
Once all of these underground materials are completed, the City will repave Rocky Canyon Road, Stafford Drive, Botts Drive, Delia Court, and Brim Court.
This $3.1 million project, which is expected to be completed by May 2018, was primarily paid for by the Stormwater Utility Fund.
The closure of Rocky Canyon Road will affect drop-off and pick-up traffic for Butler Elementary School. Parents of Butler students will be detoured around the closure of Rocky Canyon Road between Brookside Drive and North Cooper Street. Entry from Cooper Street will be from westbound Wayland Drive to northbound Margaret Drive. Exit from the school to Cooper Street will be from eastbound Rocky Canyon Road to northbound Brookside Drive to eastbound Bert Drive.
