Arlington residents sipped fine wines and shared snacks Wednesday evening at the soft opening of the city's newest business.
Boasting more than 20,000 square feet of space, Total Wine & More, 981 W. Interstate 20, carries more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 kinds of beers.
"We are happy to be here in Arlington," said store manager Dan Kobiske. "Our selection sets us apart, but also our service, pricing and commitment to the community."
Total Wine & More demonstrated that commitment on its first night, as executives gave a $10,000 check to the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, which will receive a partial match as part of the annual North Texas Day of Giving.
"When Total Wine & More opens a new store, we really like to be involved in the local community," said Lloyd Wrisley, area vice president for the company.
This is the 107th Total Wine & More to open in the country and 7th in Texas, Wrisley added. The Arlington store features a climate-controlled wine cellar for rare selections, a walk-in humidor for fine cigars, as well as space for private tastings, consumer education classes, community meetings and special events.
To mark the occasion, city leaders and area wine connoisseurs joined company executives and store employees for a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
"This is an important opening for the city," Mayor Robert Cluck said. "This is a high-quality, community-based and supportive store. It will do a lot for the city and for you."
Additionally, Cluck added, sales tax will be a boon for the city's bottom line.
"The sales tax is what we're after," Cluck joked. "And maybe a little of the wine."
After the ribbon cutting, David Brown, of Arlington, browsed the offerings of craft beers. Brown said he is thrilled to have such a high-end selection available close to home.
"You don't see this sort of selection just anywhere," Brown said, adding that he used to occasionally drive to other cities to purchase beer and wine. "I'm thrilled we have this in Arlington."
