Once a year, Road to Six Flags on the north side of Globe Life Park in Arlington transforms into a European holiday village filled with candy cane striped wooden huts and twinkling lights reminiscent of the traditional holiday market in Nuremberg, Germany.
Later this month, the magical atmosphere of the Texas Christkindl Market returns to Arlington for its fourth year and is open daily from November 28 until December 21, 2014. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
Organizers decided to rebrand the Market as the Texas Christkindl Market to highlight its roots in the Lone Star State and the South, as well as to celebrate the growing diversity of the vendors and visitors.
"This market is much bigger than Arlington," said Arlington City Councilwoman Sheri Capehart, who helped conceive the market during a 2007 visit to Bad Konigshofen, Germany, Arlington's sister city since 1951.
"We are the only traditional Christkindl Market in the South," she said. "This market was always intended to be a draw, not only from the region, but from a five state area. So it's more than just Arlington's market, it's Texas' market, and it's really the market of the South."
With free admission, it comes as no surprise that this event attracts thousands of people from north Texas, the nation and around the world. Last year's festival drew an estimated 100,000 visitors from 29 states and 11 countries.
This year's market is going to be bigger and better than ever, with more live entertainment and vendors featuring handmade gifts, unique ornaments, rare European fabrics and German delicacies.
"The Texas Christkindl Market is going to have performances on stage every day," said Capehart. "We will have more universally-known performers. During the week, we'll have unique performances by a local choir or children's group, which is what Christmas is all about. Regardless of when people come, they'll be very pleased with the entertainment we have to offer."
Texas Christkindl Market is a partnership between the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the City of Arlington and the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
