Arlington is proud to be the host of the 46th annual Special Olympics Summer Games from May 21-24 at UT Arlington! Athletes from across the state have been training for weeks to compete in one of seven sports. In addition, special events such as Opening Ceremonies, Athlete Village, Victory Dance, Closing Ceremonies and various clinics and demonstrations will round out the experience for athletes, coaches and families in attendance. More than 3,000 athletes will compete in seven sports: Track & Field, Basketball, Cycling, Equestrian, Gymnastics, Soccer and Tennis. 760 coaches and 3,750 volunteers will also be on hand for this year's Summer Games. Come out on Memorial Day at 8 am and participate in the 2nd Annual Unforgotten Heroes 5K/10K Run at Globe Life Park and run to remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Packet pick up will take place at The Runner in Arlington on Saturday, May 23, from 10 am - 6:30 pm and Sunday, May 24 from 1 - 4 pm. The Runner is located at 3535 W. Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76013. If you register after Friday, May 22, at 5 pm, you must pick up your packet the morning of the race. Fantasy in Sand featuring The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a unique family experience debuting in The American Dream City on Friday, May 22! It tells the story of characters we all know so well - Dorothy, Toto, the Wizard, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Scarecrow and more - through intricately carved sand sculptures, some of which are 20 feet tall. Tickets are on sale now at Arlington.org/fantasyinsand. General admission tickets are $19.99 with discounts available for kids (ages 11 and under), active military and groups. The experience is located at Parking Lot F by Globe Life Park in Arlington and will run through Sunday, August 23. The experience will stay open late on weekend nights when the Texas Rangers play home games so baseball fans may enjoy both events while in Arlington.
It's finally time for free summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion! This year's Green Mountain Energy 2015 Summer Concert Season kicks off May 22 with the fourth annual Downtown Arlington Center Stage Music Festival - three evenings of music and food in the heart of Downtown Arlington. Austin's Hayes Carll kicks things off as the headliner at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22, with wildly literate songs about life. On Saturday, May 23, it's classic rock with Soul Asylum, 1994 Grammy Award winners for Best Rock Song with their hit, Runaway Train. Their concert is at 8:30 p.m. Lone Star country/rock singer/songwriter Charlie Robison wraps up the festival at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 24. After festival weekend, the Levitt Pavilion begins its regular Summer Concert Series concert times of 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday until July 12, when concerts begin at 8:30 p.m.
The Justice League needs the good people of The American Dream City to fight off The Joker and Lex Luthor at Six Flags Over Texas! Justice League: Battle for Metropolis features six-passenger vehicles, 18 screens, lifelike animatronics, cutting edge special effects and 4D video. It doesn't open to the public until Saturday, May 23, 2015. However, Gold Pass Holders can exclusively ride on Thursday, May 21, followed by all Season Pass Holders on Friday, May 22. Armed with your own laser stun gun, riders turn through each scene and participate in the fight against Lex Luthor and The Joker. The dark ride also features real-time game scoring to deliver an entertaining adventure for the whole family.
Art lovers can check out a new exhibit at Arlington Museum of Art in Downtown this weekend! The exhibit contains almost 200 pieces from avant-garde Post-Impressionist artists working in a new French "modern" style. Built around the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, painter of scenes and artists from the famed Paris theatre the Moulin Rouge, this expansive exhibit will explore the anti-establishment movement among artists seeking alternative means to bring their art to a broad public and break out of the traditional molds. The exhibit is open to the public until Sunday, August 16, 2015.
Good news for Arlington area food truck lovers! Food Truck Friday Nights presented by Arlington Parks and Recreation Department will return to River Legacy Park beginning Friday, May 22, 2015. The event runs 5-10 p.m. Food truck lineups will be announced Friday morning before each event on the Arlington Parks and Recreation Facebook page. As always, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to the food truck events, as seating is limited. Come on out with family and friends and enjoy music and great food from our area food trucks. Food Truck Friday Nights will continue May 29, June 5 and June 12.
