Mansfield ISD Celebrates Opening of Anderson Elementary, Jerry Knight STEM Academy
The Mansfield Independent School District held dedication ceremonies on Saturday for the new Charlotte Anderson Elementary School and The Jerry Knight STEM Academy.
Charlotte Anderson Elementary School is the last of five elementary schools to be rebuilt under MISD's 2011 bond package.
The two-story school uses Mansfield ISD's newest elementary prototype providing two dedicated computer labs, a larger library, a larger clinic and office for the school nurse, secure main entrance vestibule, keyless access, wireless connectivity and security cameras throughout the building and campus. An updated classroom design gives the teachers a workstation with built-in storage, improved lighting and additional electrical and data outlets to support growing technology needs.
The school is named for the late Charlotte Anderson, who taught in Mansfield ISD for 39 years.
The Jerry Knight STEM Academy, 1524 N. Walnut Creek Drive, is an advanced academic program designed to provide a rigorous and focused course of study emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The mission of the academy is to give learners a voice and choice to explore, create and innovate within real-world situations. Coursework is advanced and integrates project/problem-based learning with open learning environments.
The academy is part of the district's Power of Choice initiative. It is named for Jerry Knight, a retired career and technical director who helped create, design and staff the Ben Barber Career - Technology Academy.
