Arlington resident Elva Roy recently received the 2015 "Outstanding Advocate for Older Americans" award from the United Way and Tarrant Area Agency on Aging.
The award is given in May of each year to a Tarrant county citizen of any age who exemplifies dedication to improving the quality of life for older adults in Tarrant County.
Elva's community action and focus on enhancing the lives of older adults in Arlington over qualifies her for this award.
In 2010, Elva created a group called Women Over 50 for Friendship and also participates in the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. She is a member of the Arlington Aging Texas Well assessment led by a United Way committee to study how "aging friendly" Arlington is.
Last year, Elva created a grassroots advocacy group called Age-Friendly Arlington. With more than 165 members, the group is identifying areas where it can assist the City of Arlington to reach its "aging friendly" potential. The group aims to identify older-adult needs in the areas of community and civic participation, housing, transportation and public spaces, and health and social services.
The "Outstanding Advocate for Older Americans" award is given each May during National Older Americans Month. United Way and its Area Agency on Aging work year-round to promote healthy aging and independent living in Tarrant County.
