The School Health Advisory Council has provided the AISD Board of Trustees with valuable input from the district's stakeholders. The primary role of the SHAC is to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district's health education instruction. The Board believes the function of the SHAC is vital to the Board, AISD administration and taxpayers.
One of the strategies under the Leadership, Citizenship and Responsibility performance objective in the 2016-2021 strategic plans commits the district to enhance an emotionally and physically safe learning environment that fosters cultural awareness, wellness, and a culture of respect, integrity and responsibility among students.
The goal of the SHAC is to provide an age-appropriate wellness education and environment for students that encourages healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle.
The committee serves in an advisory capacity to the Board and shall not assume the responsibilities or duties of the Board or the administration. The duties and responsibilities of the SHAC include:
- Reviewing evidence-based strategies and techniques
- Developing nutrition guidelines as recommendations
- Developing wellness criteria as recommendations
- Developing a wellness plan
- Reviewing and revising the wellness plan as necessary
Membership on the committee and a committee chairperson will be appointed by the Board. The committee will include a diverse group of individuals that represent the entire school district. The committee represents equally all citizens, students, school campuses and taxpayers within the boundaries of the Arlington ISD.
Each committee member will be asked to make a firm commitment to attend all committee meetings and to participate in the final report to the Board. SHAC meetings will begin in fall 2016 and meet periodically throughout the school year as necessary. Meeting dates, times and locations will be determined at a later date. Committee meetings are open to the public.
