As the excitement and busy schedules of the holidays begins to build, it's especially important to block off some time with your little one so you can both decompress and recharge.
The Arlington Public Library is celebrating National Family Literacy throughout the month of November, and there are tons of great ways you can help build your child's literacy skills while having fun together at the same time. Here are few ideas to get you started:
- Read some books together. If your child is old enough to read, take turns reading to each other!
- Color or draw pictures together and ask your child about what's happening in the pictures.
- Sing a nursery rhyme or song with your child. This can happen anytime, anywhere! In the car, while making dinner, in the bath, before bed - the possibilities are endless!
- If your child is beginning to read, label some simple familiar objects around the house so he or she can begin creating word associations with those objects. Door, chair, table, bed - these are all words children hear often that make a great starting point for reading.
Don't forget that the library has some great options to keep your young readers engaged at home. Our Read it Again kits are themed boxes that include books, games, and toys that follow a theme and provide hours of entertainment and discovery.
If you like the flexibility of an eReader, Tumblebook Cloud Jr. has eBooks, read-along chapter books, nonfiction, graphic novels, and more for children and tweens. Just sign in with your library card to begin downloading.
We also have weekly and special event storytimes at our locations across the city, so check the schedule and find the one that's best for you.
Be sure to visit your local Arlington Public Library branch during the month of November and check out the Family Literacy Calendar for more ideas on how to incorporate literacy activities into your everyday routines. If you can't make it in, follow the library on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to receive literacy tips, program news, and fun behind-the-scenes photos of our library life!
