The capital campaign for the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library is nearing completion, with $7,214,032 of the $8,000,000 goal raised to date. Only $758,968 remains in order to fully fund and equip the new, state-of-the-art library. The Downtown Library is scheduled to open to the public on Saturday, June 16.
The Downtown Library is a public-private partnership between the City of Arlington and the Friends and Foundation of the Arlington Public Library. Of the project's $30 million total budget, $22 million was provided by the City of Arlington.
The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation is the project's lead donor, with a gift of $4.1 million. Other donations have ranged from corporate naming opportunities to pocket change given by children. Click here to see a list of donors who gave $1,000 or more.
The Friends and Foundation have put on a variety of events since beginning their capital campaign in 2016. Highlights of the campaign include a gala evening featuring New York Times best selling author Sandra Brown; beer tastings at local breweries; garage sales and used book sales; and more.
It's not too late to join the campaign to support the new Downtown Library. Buy a library shirt online or in branches; purchase books for the new library's collection; or give online or in any library location.
