Over the winter, Arlington's Parks and Recreation Department continued beautification efforts for its Green the Oaks initiative.
As part of the project, 82 trees were planted along a 1.2-mile stretch of Green Oak Boulevard between Kelly Elliott Road and Overridge Drive in southwest Arlington. An additional 76 trees were planted on Green Oaks from New York Avenue to Collins Street in southeast Arlington.
Green the Oaks was created in 2009 to increase tree coverage within the medians along the entire route of Green Oaks Boulevard., as this 20+ mile stretch was virtually tree free. Since the start of this project, an estimated 1,185 trees have been planted. This first phase of the tree planting efforts began in southwest Arlington between Old Mansfield Highway and Bowen Road.
The Green the Oaks project aligns with City Council's goal to improve the aesthetics of major thoroughfares.
The most recent tree plantings was accomplished with the help of volunteers from Mission Continues. Mission Continues is a national organization that empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home to find purpose through community impact.
The next phase of planting is planned from Palos Verdes Boulevard, eastward to Matlock Road, which has been identified as a priority due to its low tree coverage.
Stay tuned as these areas mature over the next few years. If you have any questions, please contact the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department at 817-459-5474 or by email at [email protected].
