If your home or business needs to be remodeled because of storm damage, a building permit is most likely warranted for the repairs. Here is a list of work that does not require a permit. Ensuring that the contractor obtains the necessary permit decreases the chances of unethical contracting practices and complies with adopted building codes.
Be wary of storm chasers, or contractors who flock to an area that has been hit by bad weather. After the tornado in 2012 and the recent storms this past October, residents were approached by several out-of-town contractors who wanted to work without a permit. Homeowners should use caution with contractors soliciting door-to-door. The City of Arlington requires all contractors to register with the Community Development and Planning Department while working on homes or businesses in the City. Out-of-town companies and workers will come to the area after stormy weather; be vigilant and make sure they are operating under the City of Arlington’s building codes. If you prefer a local contractor, but demand is high, many roofers will perform provisional repairs to tide you over.
