As they strolled in and out of some of Arlington's most historic buildings, enjoyed a cold drink, and browsed the artistic and culinary wares of a handful of local Texas artisans, a small crowd of visitors discovered downtown Arlington's newest treat on Saturday morning: the Market at Knapp Heritage Park.
The Market, located at Knapp Heritage Park, 201 W. Front St., is the brainchild of the Arlington Historical Society and Knapp Heritage Park, and provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the city's pioneer past while enjoying live music, crafts, demonstrations, and shopping.
Event coordinator Liz Covert said that the park, with its historic buildings and dedicated volunteers, is still a surprise to many Arlington residents, and she wanted to see that change.
"We're building community," Covert said, when asked about why she wanted to develop the Market. "[The Market] has plenty to do for every member of the family."
Niesen, age 9, learned how to weave using a loop and loom technique in the old schoolhouse. She and her brother also toured the historic houses in the park, watched a blacksmith work with metals, and learned about the many ways corn was used during pioneer times.
"They stuffed mattresses with corn husks," Niesen said, while she put the finishing touches on a woven potholder she made with her mom.
Cheryl Mitchell, assistant professor in practice of museum studies at UTA, led the weaving demonstration and provided historical facts for visitors in the old schoolhouse. Wearing a full-length dress and apron reminiscent of the time, Mitchell moved around the schoolhouse sharing facts about school life in the early 1900s.
"I love being around people and telling stories," Mitchell said. "And having an opportunity to teach is something I like to do. Next month we're going to churn butter."
Members of the Arlington Historical Society were present throughout the park to give tours of the buildings and share interesting pieces of history. AHS director Geraldine Mills was involved in developing the idea for the Market event, and she echoed Covert's observation on community building.
"With things booming downtown it was a nice way to advertise the history [in the Park] and preserve it," Mills said. "I have a vested interest in Arlington. We want people to know we're here and take advantage of the history."
The Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26, and June 23. Fall Market dates are scheduled for September 29 and October 27. A Christmas at the Cabins event will close out the year on December 7. More details can be found on The Market at Knapp Heritage Park's facebook page.
