Residents in Waterwood Estates recently gathered at their neighbor's home for tasty tacos and nachos, cold drinks and great conversation as part of southwest Arlington neighborhood association's Spring Fling.

The well-attended event was more than just a night of food and fun. It was one of many activities planned throughout the year by the voluntary neighborhood association to maintain a strong community of friends and neighbors.

"It's a very close-knit group that the neighborhood has so it's a great place to live," said Allen Hale, who has lived in Waterwood Estates for 22 years and is responsible for organizing significant neighborhood improvement projects.

The City of Arlington is proud to feature the Waterwood Estates Neighborhood Association in this month's episode of Meet the Neighbors, a regularly scheduled web and video program that spotlights neighborhoods large and small across The American Dream City.

Waterwood Estates is a mature, diverse neighborhood located in southwest Arlington. Developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Waterwood Estates consists of just over 100 homes bounded by Lake Arlington on the west and Richard Simpson Park on the east.

In 2006, a voluntary homeowners association was established to promote, preserve and enhance the quality of life there and maintain property values, Hale said.

With the help from the City of Arlington's Neighborhood Matching Grant program, residents have been able to make desired improvements to their neighborhood, he said. That includes 2017 grants that helped pay for street sign toppers and a new entryway sign at Lakehurst Drive and Arkansas Lane that residents say create a sense of belonging, enhance pride of ownership and bring the neighbors together.

This year, Waterwood Estates received another Neighborhood Matching Grant to replace 40-year-old brick fence columns with stone columns to match their entryway sign as well as add a landscape rock border along Arkansas Lane.

"It is our hope that Waterwood residents and visitors to Richard Simpson Park/Lake Arlington will see Waterwood as a safe, secure neighborhood with proud homeowners and proud residents of Arlington," said Hale, who is the neighborhood's matching grant coordinator. "Making Waterwood a better place to live in turn makes Arlington a better place to call home. The matching grant program certainly helps us achieve our goals."
