Area police officers, K9 handlers and community members attended a memorial service Friday morning for Mojo, the first Arlington police K9 to die in the line of duty.
Police Chief Will Johnson, Mayor Jeff Williams, Chaplain Harold Elliott and Officer Vince Ramsour, who was Mojo's handler the past six years, spoke during the 30-minute ceremony, which included a 21-gun salute.
'We as a K9 Unit have been knocked down and so have I with the loss of my friend and partner Mojo. But we as a unit we must get up, brush ourselves off and move forward,'Ramsour said at the ceremony, held at Heroes Park in West Arlington.
Mojo, a Belgain Malinois who had worked for the Arlington Police Department since 2010, died July 19 after being overcome by heat while searching for an aggravated assault suspect who had fled police on foot after a vehicle pursuit. The suspect was located and arrested.
Arlington police said Mojo, who was credited for many felony apprehensions and searches for dangerous criminals, was a loyal companion and partners and provide a valuable service to the citizens of Arlington.
Attendance at Friday's memorial included members of the Arlington Fire Department's K9 unit as well as K9 units from Mansfield and Grand Prairie.
A painting of Mojo was featured at a police memorial service held for the k9 on Friday, August 5, 2016.
