Over the last 17 years, the Green Oaks School in Arlington has been helping students with intellectual disabilities achieve their dreams by providing a hands-on, person-centered education.
Due to program expansion and the additional services offered through the Green Oaks School, the name has been changed to Green Oaks Education and Support, Inc., encompassing both Green Oaks School and Green Oaks Adult Learning. In addition, new higher education options, including training for independent living and preparation for competitive employment, are on the horizon.
Executive Director Jean Jewell once dreamed of a school where students with Down syndrome, like her daughter, could get the attention they need to be successful. Today, thanks to the hard work and perseverance by Jewell and many others, that dream is a reality.
"I have been blessed to be a part of living the American Dream in Arlington for the past 17 years with Green Oaks. Because of the positive experience we have had with the school being in the community, my family and I moved here almost 11 years ago.'
The Christian-based school is located at 500 W. Houston Street, Arlington, TX 76011. The staff feels blessed to be a part of The American Dream City, and they continue to be overwhelmed by the support from the community.
"The city and people of Arlington have embraced Green Oaks Education and Support, Inc.,' said Leigh Weedman, the school's Director of Education. "Because of this, our students, all of whom have intellectual disabilities, are given opportunities for community inclusion, allowing them to experience their own American dreams in The American Dream City.'
Educational programming for Green Oaks School's 18th year will begin on Monday, August 21, 2017. Please visit the Green Oaks Education and Support website to learn how you can get involved.
