Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams has officially proclaimed Sept. 15 through 21 as Arlington Medicare Education Week, recognizing the importance of helping baby boomers and older adults learn more about Medicare. The timing of the week is significant, as it begins exactly one month before the start of the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (Oct. 15-Dec. 7).
"The number of people in need of clear information about Medicare is growing at a record pace as baby boomers reach eligibility," said Mayor Jeff Williams. "Arlington Medicare Education Week is a great opportunity for older adults to get connected with helpful resources and tools."
The Arlington observance coincides with National Medicare Education Week. As part of this initiative, UnitedHealthcare hosted a free educational event Tuesday in Arlington to help fight Medicare confusion for the nearly 231,800 local residents who are eligible for Medicare, as well as baby boomers aging into the program, caregivers and loved ones.
"Health care decisions can be difficult, but choosing the right Medicare coverage doesn't have to be a hassle if you take steps to arm yourself with knowledge and information," said Holly Steinbrecher of UnitedHealthcare. "We hope that our educational event in Arlington will help local Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers feel empowered during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period this fall."
At the event, attendees learned about Medicare enrollment, eligibility, costs, coverage and more, and will receive resources to help them prepare for open enrollment. Local UnitedHealthcare representatives and a Walgreens pharmacist will be available to speak one-on-one.
National Medicare Education Week supporters include AARP, the Caregiver Action Network (CAN), the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), Safeway, Walgreens and Albertsons, as well as health care providers, senior centers and other organizations in communities across the country. In Arlington, these include the City of Arlington, Tarrant County Senior Services, WellMed and SilverSneakers.
